WOODLAND PITCHES

We have three wild woodland sites where a group of pitches can be booked, but the sites are also suitable for single tent bookings - you might be lucky and have the wood all to yourselves! If you want to guarantee no neighbours take a look at our Exclusive Wild Camping .

The forest floor pitches are not the “lawns” that are found in the Walled Garden, but have been strimmed and raked over in preparation for use. Woodland sites are serviced by a discreetly positioned Thunderbox pine hut. These have a sink supplied with  fresh water daily for drinking, washing, washing up and a composting toilet. These are cleaned daily You will be asked to follow the rules for using this greenest of technologies to ensure that the composting works perfectly see Eco & Safety.

You can see the sunrise in the East over the Cheviots in the morning (if you are up that early!) and watch the sun set in the West over the Craik Forest in the evening.

So you can sit around the open camp fire in the evening, cooking and chatting, these pitches each have their own firebowl stance. A bag of logs is supplied within the price each day and a top-up bag of logs can be supplied from reception. You will be asked to follow the rules for Fire Safety to ensure that no accidents happen and that we can continue to allow open fires.

The Woodland Pitches for Groups

Castle View: Set in a conifer copse, this site looks across to Fatlips Castle, about a mile away on a crag high above the river Teviot (the Castle is a recently repaired Border Tower). This site has room for up to about 6 tents. (20 minutes* from the Hub)

Minto View:  Within a pine wood site, Minto View looks over the Teviot valley in which you can see the village of Denholm to the "The Paps of Minto" - a pair of rounded hills at the foot of which nestles Minto Village (15 minutes* from the Hub). This site has room for about 6 tents

These two woodland sites are separated by a strip of gorse and hawthorn, sheltering patches of wild primrose

Home Wood sits above the farm stead with views over Rule Water valley and down the Teviot Valley towards Peniel Heugh or the Waterloo Monument. (10 minutes* from the Hub). This woodland pitch has room for about 7 tents and has two Thunderboxes.

* Walking times may vary e.g. if you have kids

Minimising the environmental impact:

We take the environmental impact of our hill pitches seriously, so:

  • You must leave your car behind at the main campsite car park and walk up to your pitch. This will take 15 - 20 minutes depending on how fast you walk.
  • Back-packing your kit to your pitch will focus your mind on just how little you really need to be comfortable in the woods: you are self-reliant and burn no fossil fuels!
  • But you may wish us to transport your kit to your pitch (and bring it down again) - in which case you should, during the booking process, book an ATV transfer. There will be a charge for this, and we regret we are not insured to carry passengers - but think how much easier the walk will be if you are not carrying anything!
  • Quietness and stillness make for successful nature-watching. This may not be easy to maintain in a group - if this is what you are looking for our “really wild pitches” are fairly remote and are provided primarily with nature-watching in mind – see Wild Pitches for Pitch your own campers. We nevertheless request that groups enter into the spirit of Wild Woods Camping and subdue fireside behaviour appropriately.
